Which English Test Should You Take? IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, EIKEN and More

Last updated: October 1, 2026

English tests are not different labels for the same measurement. University admission, migration, employment in Japan, school milestones, and corporate assessment all demand different evidence. This guide chooses by purpose rather than fame.

Begin with use, not difficulty

The first question is not which test is hardest, most prestigious, or most familiar. It is which result the receiving university, immigration authority, employer, school, or professional body will accept. A TOEIC score does not satisfy an IELTS requirement merely because the number looks impressive.

If the receiving institution specifies a test, that test is your starting point. Only when several options are accepted should you compare format, turnaround time, cost, location, and your own skill profile.

What actually differs

IELTS and TOEFL serve similar routes, but reward different performances

IELTS includes a live speaking interview and places visible weight on disciplined academic writing. TOEFL iBT changed format in 2026. Compare current official samples, including repetition, interview responses, sentence construction, and email tasks, before choosing your preparation materials. Neither is universally superior.

TOEIC and EIKEN are powerful in Japan

TOEIC Listening & Reading is deeply embedded in Japanese recruitment and promotion, but it does not directly test productive ability. EIKEN connects well with Japanese school milestones, and its upper grades are genuinely demanding. Their usefulness abroad depends on the receiving institution.

PTE, Versant, and DET are not one category simply because computers are involved

PTE Academic is a four-skill admissions and migration test. Versant is commonly used by employers for screening and workforce development. The Duolingo English Test is a convenient online admissions credential where an institution accepts it. Their jobs are different.

Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing fame: popularity is not an admissions policy.
  • Confusing convenience with suitability: a nearby test can still be the wrong test.
  • Ignoring format: interviews, typing, lecture notes, and microphone performance demand different preparation.
  • Overtrusting conversion tables: CEFR mappings are useful orientation, not proof that tests are interchangeable.

Recommendations by goal

  • International university admission: begin on the university’s official requirements page.
  • Migration or professional registration: check the country, visa route, professional body, and exact test variant.
  • Employment in Japan: take TOEIC when the employer asks for it; add productive assessment when speaking and writing matter.
  • Japanese school milestones: EIKEN provides clear stages, but confirm the grade and admissions use required.
  • Long-term proficiency: Cambridge English Qualifications deserve consideration.

Advanced learners sometimes fail not because they are lazy, but because they work very hard toward the wrong measurement. Clarify the destination, confirm the accepted evidence, and only then begin test preparation.
